Is meditation a sin in the Bible? Explained!

Meditation is not a sin in Christianity until you’re focusing on God or anything else that is not related to the devil. For example – most meditation practices require you to focus on your breath or some object. If you’re doing that, it’s not a sin.

However, if you’re manifesting something against God’s words, you might be sinning.

Also, the Bible does not say anything about meditation, but there are verses throughout the Bible that support meditation.

Definition of Sin in the Bible

In short, sin is violating God’s law or rebelling against his will. When you commit a sin, you create a barrier between you and God. It leads to consequences in your spiritual journey. Ways in which you can commit a sin include:

  1. Disobedience – Breaking God’s rules, like those in the Ten Commandments.
  2. Rebellion – Rejecting God’s authority and going against his will.
  3. Missing the mark: In Hebrew, sin can mean failing to meet God’s standards.
  4. Separation from God: Going spiritually far from God can even lead to loneliness.
  5. Corruption: Sin damages your heart and mind and leads you to take more wrong actions.

If your meditation technique is demanding you to take any of these actions, please consider changing it, as you’re committing a sin.

Reasons people give to justify why meditation is a sin

People have various misconceptions in their minds and they try to convince you that meditation is a sin. Some common statements I found on the Internet include:

1. Association with Non-Christian Religions: Some say Buddhist and Hindu meditation techniques are a sin because they come straight from the devil and are incompatible with Christian beliefs.

2. Spiritual Danger: Many people believe that if you don’t focus on God during your meditation practice, you’re distancing yourself from Him. This can expose you to harmful spiritual influences.

3. Idolatry Concerns: In Judaism and Christianity, idolatry means worshipping someone or something as though it were God. Therefore, if your meditation practice involves chanting or focusing on non-Christian objects, some may view it as a potential form of idolatry.

However, all of these are misconceptions and twisted versions of God’s sayings. Now, when you already know the real definition of sin – don’t let anyone make a fool out of you!

Quotes in the Bible about meditation

As I said, there isn’t any direct mention of meditation in the Bible. However, many quotes help you meditate on the word of God and enhance your spiritual connection with him. Some examples are:

Matthew 6:34: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Isaiah 40:31: But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Psalm 34:18: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

How to meditate on the word of God?

The essence of meditation is focus. So, you’ve to focus on God’s word. There are numerous verses to meditate on, but you must choose the one that resonates with your current situation. The process is quite simple:

  • Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed, sit, and close your eyes.
  • Read your verse multiple times so it sinks in your mind.
  • Focus on the meaning of the verse.
  • Imagine God is saying those words to encourage you.
  • Spend some time in this stage.
  • Then, focus on how you’ll implement God’s saying in your life.
  • Slowly open your eyes and sit in that position for some time.
  • End your session and implement the learnings in your life to see positive changes.

In total, don’t get off track—meditation is not a sin in Christianity. By practicing the proper meditation techniques, you can actually grow closer to God.
